Best suited for beginners, this sailing course 1 provides an overview of a sailboat and the preparation required prior leaving the marina.

This sailing course content is as follows:

1. Boat parts and nautical language

This section describes the various components of a sailboat, in particular hull and deck fit out, rig assembly, ropes and fittings controlling lines. There is also an overview of the jargon and nautical terms used in the sport of sailing.

2. The dynamics of sailing

The wind on the sails produces 3 forces that influence a sailboat’s motion. The dynamics of the driving force, sideways force and heeling force are explained in this part of the course.

3. The various types of sails

A sailboat can have different types of sails depending on its rig configuration. The most common are the mainsail, headsail (jib or Genoa), and spinnaker which are illustrated in details.

4. Sailboat preparation for sailing

Before sailing there is a certain amount of preparation to be done by the crew.   This section reviews the procedures to unpack sails, set up ropes and tie basic knots.

5. Basic clothing and safety equipment

Sailboats must have on board safety equipment and crew members are required to wear appropriate clothing and sun protection to minimize exposure. These safety procedures are detailed in this section.

Very well organized and conceived. By following the course, I was able to learn and build on the concepts of sailing with minimal questions or frustration. It taught me what I was looking to learn, was well organized, and well paced.

A thorough course that enables me to learn at my own pace. I have received the basic information required and the skills to start sailing. I now feel at ease to join a boat for my first sail.  Great Course!
