To increase your awareness on all aspects of sailing, we recommend that you take this pack to prepare you to a better sailing experience. Best suited for beginners, this pack provides a series of 2 courses, including sailing principles and first sailing experience. 

You will become familiar with some important sailing terms, which can provide a solid base of your knowledge and a helpful overview of sailing basics. Learn how to prepare a boat prior to setting sail, know the important pre-sail procedures, the basic boat handling requirements and the standard manoeuvres, for example hoisting sails, operating winches, tacking and gybing / jibing.

SAILING COURSE 1 ‘SAILING PRINCIPLES’

As part of our large range of sailing courses, this is the one to start with. Best suited for beginners, this sailing course provides an overview of a sailboat and the preparation required prior leaving the marina.

The course content is as follows:

1. Boat parts and nautical language: This section describes the various components of a sailboat, in particular hull and deck fit out, rig assembly, ropes and fittings controlling lines. There is also an overview of the jargon and nautical terms used in the sport of sailing.

2. The dynamics of sailing: The wind on the sails produces 3 forces that influence a sailboat’s motion. The dynamics of the driving force, sideways force and heeling force are explained in this part of the course.

3. The various types of sails: A sailboat can have different types of sails depending on its rig configuration. The most common are the mainsail, headsail (jib or Genoa), and spinnaker which are illustrated in details.

4. Sailboat preparation for sailing: Before sailing there is a certain amount of preparation to be done by the crew.   This section reviews the procedures to unpack sails, set up ropes and tie basic knots.

5. Basic clothing and safety equipment: Sailboats must have on board safety equipment and crew members are required to wear appropriate clothing and sun protection to minimize exposure. These safety procedures are detailed in this section.

 

COURSE 2 ‘FIRST SAILING EXPERIENCE’

As part of the ‘Start Sailing’ pack, this second course complete extremely well your introduction to sailing. Best suited for beginners, this course provides an overview of your first sailing experience after leaving the marina. The course content includes pre-sail procedures, basic boat handling and manoeuvres for example hoisting sails, operating winches, tacking and gybing / jibing.

 

The sailing course content is as follows:

 

1. Getting on board & boat handling under power: This section is an introduction to getting ready to leave the marina. Once you have met the team, the skipper will query your sailing experience and provide instructions for setting up the boat.

2. Cleating a rope, rope clutch and stowing halyards: There are several techniques to manage lines on board, keeping them tidy and controlling their tension. This section explains how to coil and stow lines, and how to use clutches and cleats.

3. Operating winches: It is important to understand the loading that occur on sheets and halyards as you tack or adjust the sail. This is why the winch provides the mechanical benefit and help required to tension and release the loading of sheets and halyards.

4. Hoisting mainsail and jib: This section explains the process of hoisting the mainsail and the jib. The mainsail is always hoisted first while the boat is still under engine and pointing head to wind.

5. Going about or tacking and gybing: Tacking and Gybing are the basic manoeuvres of a sailing boat, which allow the boat to change direction. This section explains the process of tacking and gybing / jibing, which involves a clear synchronization between the crew and the helms person.
